Family Math Night III
by Rich Jackson, Math Coach
Our third Family Math Night, the first of the 2009-2010 school year, was held in the UME cafeteria on November 18th. The program was designed to engage 4-6 graders in the fun of using and applying math in a variety of settings. Due to a large number of school activities and meetings that week, the parent and student participation was small, but nevertheless, it was a fun-filled evening of math activities and games.
A special thank you must be extended to Robert Hexter, of the Nutrition Center and the Kids' Kitchen, and to Jane Burke, of Flying Cloud Institute and the coordinator for SBRSD's Creative Schools Program.

Robert used nutrition, weight, and mass to highlight the use of math in making healthy decisions about food, and Jane used geometry and space to artistically design beautiful greeting cards.
Our next Family Math Night will be held in late winter or early next spring. It will be designed to foster an appreciation of math for K-3 grade students.
